At Wednesday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift embraced '90s fashion with a modern twist, wearing Dior's chic taffeta bustier and tartan skirt. The yellow plaid pattern called to mind one of the most iconic looks of the decade: Cher Horowitz's preppy Dolce & Gabbana outfit from the 1995 film Clueless. Dior has previously paid homage to this iconic ensemble, with Natalie Portman donning a similar two-piece in 2022 for Halloween, and Blackpink’s Jisoo wearing a version at the Dior Fall-Winter 2022 show.
However, Swift's rendition of the tartan look was the edgiest yet. Her ensemble featured punk-inspired accents like black buckles, a collar, and a zippered front, paired with velvet shorts, thigh-high boots, and gloves. The outfit came straight from Dior's 2025 Cruise collection, which took inspiration from Scottish craftsmanship and Mary, Queen of Scots. Dior’s show, held in Perthshire’s Drummond Castle, highlighted the timelessness of tartan, which founder Christian Dior once described as “the only fancy fabric that resists fashions.”
Swift’s outfit was a bold departure from her usual red carpet style, which often features sequins, crystals, and glamorous gowns. She even swapped her signature red lipstick for a dramatic black smokey eye, completing the transformation.
At the VMAs, Swift won big, taking home seven awards, including Video of the Year for her collaboration with Post Malone on Fortnight. During her acceptance speech for Best Collaboration, she also reflected on the September 11 attacks, paying tribute to the victims and their families. Her appearance came just a day after she publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for the U.S. presidency, making headlines worldwide.
