Beyond his work with the Eagles, Souther collaborated with Bonnie Raitt on “Run Like a Thief” and contributed multiple songs to Ronstadt’s catalog, including “Faithless Love” and “White Rhythm and Blues.” Together, Souther and Ronstadt performed duets like “Prisoner in Disguise” and “Hearts Against the Wind,” the latter featured on the
Urban Cowboy soundtrack. Souther also teamed up with James Taylor on Taylor’s 1970 hit “Her Town Too.”
In addition to his collaborations, Souther enjoyed a solo career, releasing hits such as “You’re Only Lonely” from his 1979 album. He also formed the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band in the 1970s alongside Chris Hillman of the Byrds and Richie Furay of Poco.
Souther made his mark in television and film, appearing in shows like Nashville, Thirtysomething, and Purgatory, as well as films like Postcards from the Edge and My Girl 2.
Rita Wilson paid tribute to Souther on Instagram, recalling their musical collaborations and personal friendship. “JD gave us so much in his music,” she wrote, adding, “He will be greatly missed, but his music lives on.”
Souther is survived by his two sisters, his former wife, her daughter, and his beloved dogs, Layla and Bob. His legacy in the music world, both as a performer and a songwriter, will continue to resonate.
