Alabama Teen Passes Away After Suffering Head Injury During High School Football Game

An Alabama community is grieving the loss of a high school quarterback who passed away after sustaining a brain injury during his school’s season-opening football game on Friday night, according to statements from school officials and the teen’s family.

Caden Tellier, a 16-year-old student at John T. Morgan Academy, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after suffering a head injury during a game against Southern Academy, officials reported Friday night. His death was announced the following day.

The Alabama Independent School Association's Executive Director, Michael McLendon, confirmed that Tellier suffered a brain injury in a social media post. However, no specific details were provided regarding how the injury occurred.

"Caden has met Jesus face to face," Tellier's parents shared in a heartfelt statement on Saturday. "Everyone who knew Caden experienced his kindness, generosity, and love. True to his nature, he is giving of himself one last time."

The school's headmaster, Bryan Oliver, confirmed that Tellier was an organ donor, as reported by AL.com.

“Lives have been touched by the way he lived, and now lives will be saved through his passing,” the Tellier family added in their statement.

Oliver described Tellier as a "shining light" at the Selma, Alabama, private school.

“He was a student, a friend, an athlete, and most importantly, a follower of Christ. There are no words to express how we feel as a school community and family,” Oliver said in a statement posted on social media.

The Tellier family has announced that a service will be scheduled soon. In response to the tragedy, Morgan Academy officials have suspended all school activities for the week, according to the school association.
