Great Britain's Stephen Clegg clinched his first Paralympic gold medal and set a world record in the S12 100m backstroke final. The 28-year-old triumphed with a time of 59.02 seconds at La Defense Arena.
Clegg, who previously earned a silver and two bronzes at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics, had described winning gold as "unfinished business." With this victory, he becomes the third member of his family to win a Paralympic medal for ParalympicsGB. His sister, Libby, has won two golds and three silvers across three Games, while his brother, James, secured bronze in the pool in 2012.
There could be further success for GB swimmers on Saturday, with William Ellard, Poppy Maskill, Olivia Newman-Baronius, and Alice Tai all strong contenders for medals. Additionally, 13-year-old Iona Winnifrith, the youngest member of the ParalympicsGB squad in Paris, will compete in the SM7 individual medley at 19:10 BST.
