LAS VEGAS -- Brock Purdy showcased both efficiency and some costly mistakes in the 49ers' 24-24 preseason tie against the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday night. Purdy completed 9 of 12 passes for 96 yards but also threw a red-zone interception. In a tense moment for his coach, Purdy chased down the defender to make a touchdown-saving tackle.
“When it happened, I was hoping he wouldn't tackle him,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “Because it's preseason, let him score. But the fact he tackled him and got him down and didn’t get hurt, I’m glad he didn’t.”
The Raiders tied the game with just 16 seconds remaining, thanks to Daniel Carlson's 43-yard field goal. Earlier, Joshua Dobbs had put the 49ers ahead 24-21 with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Cowing late in the third quarter.
The game saw contrasting strategies as the regular season looms. The 49ers opted to play most of their starters in the first quarter, while the Raiders gave their backups a chance to audition for roster spots. With roster cuts approaching, Raiders coach Antonio Pierce acknowledged the difficulty of reducing the team.
“It’s not easy cutting 37 men and telling them they got to find somewhere else to play,” Pierce said.
Nathan Peterman, who unexpectedly started for the Raiders, completed 12 of 19 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Carter Bradley led the tying drive for the field goal, finishing with 169 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Tyreik McAllister, fighting for a roster spot, made a strong case by returning a punt 81 yards for a touchdown and catching a 35-yard touchdown pass.
The 49ers used the game to assess their starters, including the preseason debuts of Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Kittle made a standout 19-yard catch among three receptions for 34 yards. However, not all starters played, with notable absences like All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey due to a calf injury and ongoing contract disputes with Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk.
Purdy's time on the field was brief but productive, guiding the 49ers to a 10-0 lead before his interception.
“It felt good to get out there with the guys and move the ball,” Purdy said. “We were all in rhythm.”
The game took place at Allegiant Stadium, the 49ers’ first visit since losing the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs six months earlier.
“Actually really like the stadium,” Shanahan said. “Cool atmosphere... But, yeah, wasn’t the best feeling going into the locker room remembering the last time you were in there, but you get over it pretty fast.”
As the regular season approaches, the 49ers are set to host the New York Jets on September 9, while the Raiders will visit the Los Angeles Chargers on September 8.
