Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Detained at French Airport

Telegram's chief executive, Pavel Durov, was arrested by French authorities at Le Bourget Airport, just north of Paris, after his private jet landed. The 39-year-old billionaire, who holds dual citizenship in the United Arab Emirates and France, was detained under a warrant related to the operations of his popular messaging app, Telegram.

The arrest reportedly stems from an investigation into Telegram’s moderation practices, with Durov accused of failing to address the app’s use for criminal activities. Telegram, which Durov founded in 2013, is especially popular in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet states. It was banned in Russia in 2018 after Durov refused to hand over user data, though the ban was lifted in 2021.

Durov, who was born in Russia and now lives in Dubai, left Russia in 2014 after refusing government demands to shut down opposition communities on his VKontakte social media platform, which he subsequently sold.

Russian officials and the country's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, have condemned Durov's arrest, questioning whether Western human rights organizations would remain silent on the issue. Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, also commented on the situation, using the hashtag #freepavel and drawing parallels to his own experiences with criticism over moderation on his platform.

Telegram has grown to become one of the leading social media platforms, following giants like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat.
